When I receive queries from people about dreadlocks many of the same questions come up. I thought it would be helpful to answer some of those questions here so that you have more information about dreadlocks, booking with me and the process. I know that having dreadlocks done and choosing the right loctician for you is really important, so please have a read through and of course contact me if you still have questions.
Please remember that I need photos of your hair before I can confirm prices. The cost depends on the length and thickness of your hair and how long you would like the dreadlocks to be if you are having extensions.
Dreadlocks in your own hair Starts at £350 for roughly shoulder length or shorter. Price will increase for longer and thicker hair.
Dreadlocks with human hair extensions Starts at £680 for roughly shoulder length or shorter and average thickness, including the hair for the extensions. Price may increase depending on hair length and thickness, and how much length you wish to be added.
Dreadlock maintenance £35 an hour. The length of time depends on how many dreadlocks you have and how much work and repair they need. The time is usually between 3 and 7 hours.
Partial dreadlocks £35 an hour. This includes having 2 or 3 rows of dreadlocks underneath loose hair, and also dreadhawks where the sides and back are shaved. I often recommend having extensions on partial dreadlocks, and therefore there will be an additional cost depending on how much extension hair is to be added. The time is usually between 4 and 8 hours.
Extending existing dreadlocks £35 an hour. This includes adding loose hair to create flowing tips to dreadlocks. There will be the additional cost of the extension hair which will vary as to how many dreadlocks need extending. Maintenance is often also required and therefore this type of work could take 2 days to complete.
Are dreadlocks permanent?
The dreadlocks that I make are made from your own hair in a way that is long lasting and pretty permanent. I know people who have brushed out their dreadlocks with a lot of effort, but the dreadlocks I make are not intended to be temporary.
Where am I based?
I work from home, making dreadlocks in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, UK. I am easily reached by the neighbouring counties of Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire. Amersham is easily accessed via the Metropolitan Line if travelling from London. I do advertise my services widely because there are very few professional dreadlock makers in this area, and I know that people will travel to have their done by the right person.
Am I able to travel to you?
I generally will work from home because I have everything that I need here set up to do your hair as comfortably as possible. Having dreadlocks made is a big step and it is better for both of us if we can work in a space that is set up to achieve this. In your home there will be distractions from other things and I do feel this takes away from the process.
However, I am willing to consider a mobile service in certain circumstances if you are really unable to travel to me. I will need to charge for travel, usually 45 pence per mile. I also arrange dreadlock tours to certain areas throughout the year if I have enough interest and can book in a number of clients there. I travel to Somerset several times a year and would be happy to book in clients from this area. If you are a bit further away, contact me with your interest and I will see if I can arrange a tour to your area!
How long will your dreadlock appointment take?
Creating dreadlocks takes a long time! It is hard to say how long your appointment will take, although I will try to give you a rough idea beforehand. If you are having new dreadlocks made it will depend on how long and thick your hair is, your hair type and how easily it dreads, how many dreadlocks we fit into each row and even the width of your hairline. If you are having dreadlocks with extensions there is more work and time involved attaching the extension hair, and it will depend on how long you want the extensions to be.
If you are having maintenance it depends on how many dreadlocks you have, how long since your last maintenance, whether your dreadlocks need major work and reconstruction or just a quick tidy of the roots.
A full head of dreadlocks may take 2 whole days to finish. Shorter, finer hair may be done much quicker, in one day or one and a half.
A full head with extensions will probably take 2 whole days – this could be two full days or broken into 3 slightly shorter sessions for comfort.
Partial dreadlocks and dreadhawks can be done in one day.
I always allow a whole day for maintenance as sometimes a lot of work is needed. Often it takes between 4 and 6 hours.
I know that there are locticians that work much faster than these timescales. I think it’s important to remember that there are lots of different techniques out there and variable results. I have seen work that has been done much quicker but not necessarily with the same care, attention and quality that I strive to provide to my customers. I try to work as quickly as I can, but I will not rush something that is so important to you.
How can you make a booking for dreadlock work?
You can contact me either by email firstname.lastname@example.org or via my social media pages. In order to give you the information you will want regarding prices and appointments I will need to see pictures of your hair that clearly show the length, colour and thickness. For maintenance I need to see the roots of the dreads as well as the overall look of the hair.
It is helpful if you have an idea of what you’d like and can explain or show me pictures. I can then advise if that is achievable and I can suggest what might work best for your hair.
If you don’t know what you’d like or feel a bit lost about what would work, that’s totally fine too! I can make suggestions about what would work and we can plan your new look together.
Once we’ve agreed what work you’re going to have and decided on a date, I will need to take a deposit to confirm the booking. This will be £90 to hold the date and if I need to buy hair for you then an additional amount to cover the cost of the hair. Deposits are non refundable, including the hair cost as I am unable to return hair once it’s been purchased.
I will send you my address once the booking is confirmed.
How are extensions fitted and what is the cost of the hair?
You can buy pre-made dreadlock extensions for permanent or temporary use. However, I buy good quality human extension hair and attach this directly to your own hair, before making it into a dreadlock extension. This is so that I can make sure I can match the colour and thickness of the hair perfectly to your own hair, creating a seamless join. No one will know you have extensions as they will blend with your own hair.
Extension hair is very expensive and I will only use hair that I know will produce dreadlocks that look good and will last a long time. You can buy cheap hair online but I prefer to use brands of hair that I have either used before and trust the quality, or where I can go into a shop and see before I buy it. When I have seen the colour and thickness of your hair I will have an idea about where to buy the hair from and how much I’ll need for the work. If you have dyed or an unusual colour hair we will need to decide whether to try and colour match the hair or whether to buy blonde hair which you can then dye as you would like it. I do not dye hair or offer any colour services.
